DETAILED GEOLOGICAL MAPPING OF SOUTH SAMAWA REGION SCALE 1:25000 ( FIFTH STAGE )

Abstract

SUMMARY

The project area of about 1512 square kilometers was mapped by the detailed mapping project on scale 1:25000 during the period between 1/6/2012 – 31/12/2012. The project area is located to the southwest of Samawa city in Al- Muthana governorate. The exposed rocks belongs to many formations with different types of quaternary sediments, ranging in age from Middle Eocene to Pliocene- Pleistocene. These are (from older to younger): Dammam, Euphrates, Zahra Formations and Quaternary sediments. Geomorphologically, the project area is generally flat with some undulation. The main geomorphological unites are Denudational units, Fluvial unit, Aeolian units, Solution units and Evaporated units. The drainage pattern is usually simple and dendritic. Structurally, mapped area is located in the stable shelf of the Arabian shield within Salman sub- zone. Many of the faults those were set in the previous study were canceled in our present project. (204) rock samples were collected from the exposed rocks of different formations and Quaternary sediments and analyzed for work requirements in addition to evaluate the economic sediments of the area. The surface water resources in the project area are seasonal rainfall. Most of springs and hand dug wells in the area are dried due to the low water table of ground water.
