The map area is located nearly in central north part of Iraq; some big cities lies within the map area such as Samarra, Biji, Tikrit belong to Salah Aldin governorate. a big sand dunes lies in the middle part of map area to the northeast of AL-Shari lake, Tigris river, Diyala river, aladhaim river exist in the map area, Himreen lake exist in the down right corner of the map area
The remote sensing techniques have used in order to investigate possible Land Use Land Cover (LULC) map of Samarra Quadrangle, scale 1:250 000 depending on Landsat TM satellite image at acquisition date 2011, and classification procedure that is developed by USGS. LULC map has produced depending on maximum Likelihood supervised classifications (ML) of TM image. This image was classified into five coefficient is 0.7938 by using ERDAS Imagine v.11 program. The LULC raster image is converted to vector structure, using Arc GIS v.10 program in order to create a digital LULC map
Five main classes of LULC have recognized in the map area, these are Urban and Built-up Land (code 1), Vegetated Land (code 2), Agricultural Land Non- Vegetated (code 3), Water (code 5), and finally Barren Land class (code 7), The Agricultural Land Non-Vegetated class has divided into two subclasses, which are Cultivated Land (sub code 31), Harvested Land (sub code 32),. The Water class has divided into two Subclasses River and Canals (sub code 51), and Lakes (sub code 52). The Barren Land Class has divided into five subclasses, which are Salt flat(sub code 71) , Sandy area(sub code 73),which include Sandy area(Aeolian) subclass(sub code 731) which divided two subclasses Sand dunes(sub code 7311) and Sand sheets(sub code 7312),bare Exposed Rock subclass(sub code 74), which include mixed exposed rocks(sub code 743), Mixed barren land subclass(sub code 77) , Bare soil (sub code 78),Gypcrete(sub code 710).
