الملخص | The Study area is located in north of Baghdad between Tigris and Diyala Rivers The Quaternary sediments cover all parts of the study area represented with flood plain deposits (clay, sand, silt). This area was selected because it has not studied previously in detail, .This study is consisted of two parts, field work and office work. The field work is suspended due to financial constraints, while the office work conducted depending on the hydrogeological database and the previous hydrogeological and geological studies.
This area affected by Tigris, Diyala Rivers and irrigation channel when large number of wells drilled in this rangeland from government and private sector. In this Area most of wells are penetrate the Quaternary and InJana formations with depth ranging from60 m to100 m.
The climate of study area is under the conditions of arid climate, which is highly affected by desert condition. It is characterized by hot and dry summer and relatively cold winter with low rainfall. Topographically the study area is flat, where the flood plain sediments cover the entire area.
The general direction of the groundwater flow in study area is mainly from north to south and northwest to southeast, with local divergences.
Quality of Groundwater is variable; it is mainly sulphatic in north part of study area and chloridic in south part. The groundwater in the map area is classified according to the total dissolved solids into five main classes: fresh water, slightly brackish water, moderately brackish water, highly brackish water and salty water. Most of the groundwater in the map area is not suitable for human drinking, but it is mostly suitable for livestock.
The groundwater can be used for irrigation especially near rivers and irrigation channels. It can be used for building and construction and some industrial purposes. | |
