Abstract

The map area is located in the southeastern part of Iraq near the Iraqi Kuwaiti -Iranian borders;it lies within the Mesopotamia fordeep.The aim of this study is to preparea LULCM of Abadan & Bubian Quadrangles, scale 1:250 000 depending on Landsat ETM satellite image at acquisition date 2002by usingclassification procedure in ERDASprogram. Six classes of LULC have been recognized in the map area which are Urban and Built-up Land, Vegetated Land, Agricultural Land Non-Vegetated, Water, Wet land, and Barren Land. The Barren Land Classis subdivided into four subclasses, which are Salt Flats, Sandy Area (Beaches), Mixed barren land, and Bare soil.Some classes were modified and interpolated usingGIS depending on visual interpolation, because of the interference between these classes in some places in the maparea. No field checking was carried out for this report. The overall accuracy assessmentwas about 85% and kappa coefficient was 0.87.
