    الملخص
The Shaikh Sa'ad District is located between Kut and Ali Al – Gharbi cities. The landfill site is located 6 Km to south of Shaikh Sa'ad District, and covers an area about 6000 m2. There are no any settlements near the landfill site. The site is 4 Km far from the Tigris River, so it is far away from any effects of contamination. Geologically the landfill site is located in the eastern south part of the Tigris River flood plain, it is covered entirely by Quaternary sediments, which consist of fluvial sediments belong to Holocene Period. The flood plain sediments represent the main sediment in the site as well as natural levees, crevasse splay, and shallow depression in addition to Aeolian sediments. The climate in the landfill site is semi-tropic, which is distinguished by hot and dry summer, cold and moist winter. The mean annual rainfall reach to 182 mm/year, and the mean annual temperature is 24 C◦. The climate can be described in Iraq as a rainy in winter and dry in summer. Hydrologically the flood plain sediments, which are composed of alternation of sand, silt and clay, represent the main upper aquifer. The static water level is not more than 5 m below the ground surface. The type of the groundwater in the landfill site is Na-Cl, and the salinity is very high and reaches to 60120 ppm (brine water), so it is considered useless for any purpose. The results of the grain size analysis of the sediments show that the depth from (0 – 3.5) m is within Sandy Mud Zone, while the depth from (3.5 – 4.75) m represent the Muddy Sand Zone, which represent the groundwater bearing horizon due to relative high permeability and porosity. We can classify the level of risk of groundwater contamination in the site as a moderate to low rate, due to the presence of the thick and se
